HYANNIS – The challenges surrounding the homeless trying to survive on the streets of Hytown don’t appear to be going away anytime soon. It’s a serious ongoing problem that seemingly has local officials scratching their heads about what to do next…
At about 4:00 a.m. this morning, two Barnstable patrolmen responded to a report of a homeless man sleeping on the open sidewalk near the entrance to the Hyannis Village Green.
Due to recent violence and littering, the bandstand on the village green is now off limits to all homeless campers. Those who have been using the bandstand and surrounding gardens as their temporary home in recent months, are now forced to find someplace else to set up camp.
The above HN Photo shows officers speaking with the man who was reportedly camped out sleeping on the sidewalk; the photo also shows an early morning dog walker in the foreground. It’s a time when Main Street slowly begins to see more and more sidewalk foot traffic, with local residents beginning their daily routines. The sight of the downtrodden sleeping on a Main Street sidewalk can be unsettling for some. In this case, officers eventually convinced the homeless man to move along to somewhere else…
… ‘anywhere else, just not here’ are words many homeless individuals get used to hearing… but are never at ease with hearing. And it’s quite likely this will not be the last time today that officers will be called to deal with those who unfortunately have nowhere else to go.
(There are no easy solutions here. Just temporary Band-Aids, for now…)
The following HN Video highlights Tuesday morning’s violent incident that caused officials to now strictly enforce no trespassing or camping on the bandstand during the overnights… CLICK HERE to read more about Tuesday morning’s incident.
