HN PHOTOS: While the Cape sleeps, these guys load fresh produce onto colorful trucks in Hyannis…
HYANNIS – [HN NOTES] – We creatures of the night are a special breed. Which is why I felt compelled to check out the nightly operation at the Guaranteed Fresh Produce & Dairy Company, located at 35 Iyannough Road.
Personally, I love trucks. Especially well maintained colorful trucks that signify a special pride in what their owners wish to accomplish. And although the daily logistical operations involving colorful trucks may seem mundane to some, that’s only because some of us simply take such things for granted. Like, for example, the process related to how field fresh spinach travels from the farm to your plate… and the immensity of it all, including all the people who will it to happen. (And I personally find my food actually tastes a little better when I take a moment to consider such things…)
Anyways, wanting to more fully appreciate my veggies, I thought it would be nice to visit and photograph what goes on at the Guaranteed Fresh Produce loading docks…
Top HN photo: Addison Weiner, stands next to one of his family’s many colorful trucks having just expressed his pride in how each one is unique with images of different types of produce. Addison has been in love with the family business for as long as he can remember, fondly recounting packing limes at the tender age of eight. The family business runs seven days a week, sending out as many as 20 to 30 or more refrigerated delivery trucks across the region every day. Their produce trucks travel from Hyannis to Provincetown, and as far away as Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. Most of their produce is trucked daily onto the Hyannis loading docks from Chelsea, Mass., where much of the region’s fruits and vegetables arrive directly from the farm. The operation also involves moving fresh dairy and some frozen foods. Their customers range from restaurants to local schools…
The refrigerated loading docks were bustling this morning at around 4:30 a.m., and HN was able to quickly take a few snapshots. In the following photo, Addison shoulders what appears to be a sack of grapefruit.

In the following photos, “John Boy” Dupuis, who has been with the company for 15 years, checks his list after hoisting a sack of carrots onto a hand truck.

In the following photos, Fabian loads a box of spinach from the dock onto one of the trucks.

In the following photo, John Dill suddenly hustled by with some boxes of dairy products…

And last but not least, more trucks! It was a fun morning visit for HN! Cool trucks (literally)… and a smooth produce operation! I can’t think of very many things much nicer than that! 🙂
