“And he has to live like this on the edge of destruction, alone, with nobody at all to understand or pity him.” ~ Leo Tolstoy, The Death of Ivan Ilych
HYANNIS – [HN NOTES & INSIGHTS] – The report of a homeless woman throwing a beer bottle at an East End convenience store clerk was not a pleasant wake-up call from yesterday’s early evening power nap. The novella by Leo Tolstoy, luckily for me, somehow remained open, upside-down on the precise page where I must have dozed off. I was at the part where Ivan Ilych was suffering from an agonizingly slow, painful death from cancer…
… and then I somehow suddenly found myself in a surprisingly pleasant, weird dream, floating on a raft under a peaceful blanket of melting dusk. Fading into benign, restful darkness. No fear. The sea was calm with nothing else in sight. No land. No sirens. It was a great dream and I liked it there. Everything was quiet, except for the faint, slowly rising “ha-ha-ha” call from a distant seagull, making its way toward me. The gull’s alarm became louder and louder… and then suddenly, no more peaceful raft. I was back in the real world. The annoying “HA-HA-HA” turned into my cellphone. It was one of my watchers, ‘I’d better answer it…’ He was reporting the beer bottle incident.
“Are you out?” he said.
“No, not yet.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him about my more important endeavor, studying the inside of my eyelids. “Take a picture, would ya?”
“I’ll try.” And then the line went dead.
“Let’s go girl. Time to get the show on the road.” A sleepy pup, eyeballing me with contempt because I probably just ruined her own peaceful raft dream.
It wasn’t until later I learned the woman accused of whipping a beer at an East End store clerk was in custody. Cops caught her about a block away, trying to hide her remaining beer bottle behind her back when confronted. A homeless woman, visiting from off-Cape. With a history of volatile behavior, including resisting arrest. ‘Welcome to Hyannis’ was one of my random, more sarcastic thoughts. ‘God bless her…’ was another, a little more sincere…
As you will see and hear in the following HN audio/visual presentation, it was mostly routine calls for the remainder.
In the first HN photo, Barnstable police responded to the parking lot at 500 Main Street, a place where motor enthusiasts gather every Wednesday to rev their engines, and hem and haw about mufflers and whatnot. It’s typically a very peaceful group. But last evening police received a report of a fight in progress. There were no active fisticuffs by the time officers encountered the group of young adult males. But to avoid further issues, officers decided to move the crowd along. One male, however, was taken into custody as officers were in the process of having everyone disperse.
In the second HN photo, a bicyclist was struck and knocked off his ride at the intersection of Main Street and Camp Street. He was sore and scraped up a bit, but was otherwise able to walk away from the scene with his bent up bike. The driver remained on scene. It was an accident with no serious injuries. There were no citations issued.
In the third HN photo, officers responded to a parking lot on Route 132 near the intersection with Bearses Way for some type of loud disturbance. A woman, the most vocal compared to everyone else on scene, was taken into protective custody.
The first three photos were all routine stuff. The types of calls that happen all day long in Hyannis.
But the fourth HN File Photo and call audio touches upon a more serious call where police reportedly tried to stop and arrest a suspect in a domestic incident last evening in Yarmouth. The suspect reportedly failed to pull his car over for Dennis Officers and state police. Officers across the Cape were on the lookout. It’s uncertain if the suspect is still at large. The suspect reportedly has 126 entries on his adult record. HN will provide updates if and when they become available.
Aside from that, please have a very safe and splendiferous Hytown day!
