*** WATCH *** PURSUIT CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Possible suspect in nearby shots fired flees traffic stop… [UPDATED]]
HYANNIS/WEST YARMOUTH – As you will see in the following HN Video and Photos, Barnstable Police were investigating a report of gunshots in the area of Fresh Holes Road and Hiramar Road in Hyannis early this morning. Witnesses believe they heard and possibly saw a gun being fired and they also reported seeing a black SUV flee the area. Nobody was hurt. No shell casings were found… but officers believed it was a likely shooting scene… possibly involving a revolver… [UPDATE: Police did report finding at least one shell casing later in the morning… see photos below…] [Also see YPD update/media statement below…]
The description of the fleeing suspect vehicle was put out to surrounding towns.
A HN camera was rolling a short while later when Yarmouth Police stopped a dark colored Mercedes SUV on Town Brook Road in West Yarmouth. Additional Yarmouth and Barnstable squad cars, responded to the traffic stop to provide backup. In the video you’ll see Yarmouth and Barnstable officers approach the driver who was still seated behind the wheel…
… and then all hell broke loose! The possible shooting suspect suddenly closed his car door and took off driving from the scene. There was a brief pursuit up Town Brook Road to where the fleeing Mercedes struck a trash dumpster before finally coming to a stop. The driver then fled into the nearby woods…
This is a developing story… The driver that fled may have or may NOT have been the suspect in the Hyannis neighborhood gunshots call…
Police know the driver’s identity. They reportedly found a quantity of marijuana in the vehicle… but it remains uncertain why the driver actually fled.
Barnstable, Yarmouth, and state police searched the woods and surrounding area. The search was eventually terminated and according to the YPD, the suspect remains at large at the time of this report…
