*** WATCH *** HUNT ENDED IN HYANNIS: Male allegedly slashed two people with “box cutter type instrument,” ran over man and fled… [UPDATED DETAILS]
UPDATE – 7/31/2019 @ 11:45 p.m. – According to a Yarmouth PD media statement, yesterday’s arrest was the end result of an armed assault in West Yarmouth, followed by a litany of other offenses, including a hit-and-run truck vs. pedestrian crash.
The YPD statement reads: “On Friday, July 30, 2021, at approximately 5:25 pm, the Yarmouth Police Department responded to Hoover Road in West Yarmouth for a reported disturbance in progress. While enroute Officers were advised that an individual involved in the disturbance may have been hit by a motor vehicle. Officers Mellett and Brule arrived and located a male laying on the road with severe lower body injuries. Officers quickly learned that the suspect, later identified as Matthew Amick age 30 from Hyannis, had fled the scene and struck the victim in the process of fleeing. It was learned that Amick had also thrown a shovel through the front window of the residence and slashed two victims with a box cutter type instrument during the initial disturbance.
Amick fled the Hoover Road address and traveled south on Willow Street into Hyannis. While fleeing, Amick struck a motor vehicle at the intersection of Camp Street and Willow Street and fled the crash scene without stopping. Officers immediately began searching the area and located Amick’s vehicle at a business on Willow Street.
A short time later, Amick was located at his address on Spring Street in Hyannis. Amick was located hiding in a crawl space in the basement of the home. Officers used de-escalation tactics and successfully negotiated Amick out of the crawl space and into custody.
One of the victims was treated on scene and refused transport to the hospital. The second victim was transported to a Boston Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The victim is a 63 year old male from Yarmouth.
The incident remains under investigation by the Yarmouth Police Detective Division. The Yarmouth Police Department was assisted by the Barnstable Police Department, Massachusetts State Police and the Yarmouth Fire Department. The Yarmouth Police Department commends all of the public safety personnel involved for the excellent work on this very complex and dangerous incident.

YARMOUTH/HYANNIS – [DEVELOPING] – A male was found hiding from police in a basement and taken into custody earlier this evening in Hyannis. A manhunt involving two police departments ended at an address at the corner of Washington Street and Louis Street. The male, said to be 30-years-old, was wanted for allegedly running over a man and fleeing. The wanted suspect then allegedly slashed two people with a blade at another scene he was trying to flee from, according to sources. The pedestrian that was struck was eventually airlifted from Hyannis with serious, multi-system trauma.
At around 5:30 p.m., first responders became very busy, responding to at least two crash scenes, one where a male pedestrian, approximately age 50, was thrown a distance after allegedly being struck by the suspect’s pickup truck in Yarmouth.
Sources tell HN that the fleeing suspect also allegedly struck a fence before taking off at a high rate of speed from a densely populated family neighborhood in the area of Willow Street and Camp Street.
The suspect then reportedly crashed with another vehicle just over the town line on Yarmouth Road in Hyannis…
All-in-all, the suspect was reportedly involved in several traffic accidents and allegedly slashed two people with a knife or box cutter at one of the scenes. NOTE: Details are still developing as the crimes scenes were spread over two towns, with all the crashes and alleged violence happening near the Yarmouth/Barnstable (Hyannis) town line.
As you will see in the following HN Video, Barnstable and Yarmouth police searched for the fleeing suspect along the railroad tracks in Hyannis. They also went door to door in a Hyannis neighborhood, eventually locating the suspect hiding in a basement hours later. The suspect reportedly had a camera system so he could hear and see cops coming. According to one source, the suspect is looking at multiple serious charges, possibly ranging from attempted murder, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, and other criminal motor vehicle offenses. The Yarmouth Police Department transported the suspect back to their headquarters under arrest.
