IT MUST BE “KNIFE SEASON…” [HN MULLINGS FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE… & WHATNOT…]
Yarmouth Police patrol officers responded to the area of Route 28 in South Yarmouth during the wee hours, Tuesday morning, after receiving a report from a young male pedestrian (see top HN photo) saying he had just been threatened with a knife by another young male who fled the scene wearing a brown hoodie. At around 3:00 a.m., officers caught up to a young male out strolling along Route 28, wearing a brown hoodie as described by the alleged victim. Officers began to have a word with the young man while informing him of his rights, etc… The young man responded to officers by repeatedly saying he had just turned 21 years old and that he was on his way home to eat the rest of his birthday cake. Officers were unable to locate a knife as the young man kept repeating his 3:00 a.m. cake story. Cake was the theme, and he was sticking to it. Officers ran birthday boy’s info through the computer and, probably because they didn’t have enough, decided to walk away… but only after identifying him and giving him a hairy eyeball, or two.
As officers walked away, the young man in the brown hoodie, now seemingly less nervous, blurted out, once he was out of reach, “Hey, aren’t ya going to wish me a ‘happy birthday!’” There wasn’t a single response from the officers as they slid back into their cruisers, eyes peeled… and it remains entirely uncertain as to whether birthday boy actually got to have his cake and eat it, too. But assuming the cake was, in fact, eaten and therefore long gone now, leaving the young man in a current state of cakelessness, he did at least receive an unexpected birthday gift from Hyannis News, who also happened to be on scene… and I hope he gets to read this:
“Happy birthday, young man… and don’t take this the wrong way, but I hope I don’t ever see your face EVER again at a 3:00 a.m. felony crime scene investigation…
… ora capiche?
And I’m sure the feeling is mutual.
Now please, carry on your way to love and serve the Lord, young man! God bless.”
Later Tuesday evening, Barnstable Police officers also had a random Route 28 knife incident to deal with in Hyannis. Sometime prior to midnight, patrol officers responded to Route 28 in the area of Straightway North Street for a report of man with a knife chasing someone with a camera. Officers caught up to and investigated several young adult males. According to sources, the matter is likely going to end up before a court magistrate due to inconsistencies and differences in witness accounts. No further details were available at the time of this report.
Like I said, “It must be Knife Season.”

“The victim tragically killed in last week’s pedestrian accident on Jobs Fishing Road is identified as 92 year old Dorothy L. Ilott of Mashpee. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim’s family. The accident remains under investigation by the Mashpee Police Department as well as the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team and more information will be provided as it becomes available.”
