Jeep Crash in Brewster Snaps Pole, Floods Yards, Kills Power — Driver Walks Away [HN Photos]

BREWSTER, MASSACHUSETTS — A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning left a stretch of Route 39 without power and water after a Jeep SUV ripped through a utility pole and a fire hydrant before slamming into trees and a fence.
Brewster police and firefighters responded around 5:30 a.m. to the scene near 174 South Orleans Road. The vehicle snapped the pole, downed power lines, and sheared off the hydrant, sending water gushing into nearby yards. At least one resident reported losing water service. The local water company later arrived and shut off the flow from the open hole where the hydrant had stood.
The adult male driver sustained minor injuries but was protected by the airbag and walked away from the wreck without needing hospital transport.
The road was closed completely and is expected to stay shut until crews can repair the hydrant and restore the power lines. Harwich police arrived quickly to assist with traffic until a second Brewster unit could take over.
Brewster Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
