ABOVE: A number of uniformed Barnstable Police patrol officers responded to a Hyannis address shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday after a report of a man suffering some type of mental health crisis in someone’s backyard. He was said to be holding a crowbar. Officers arrived and confronted the man. He was reportedly fully cooperative when officers arrived. A Hyannis Fire Department ambulance crew evaluated the distraught man, who eventually refused further care. Officers listened carefully to the man as they decided their next course of action. After talking it over with her supervisor, a patrolwoman who had developed a rapport with the man gave him a ride back to his home across town. These are the type of potentially volatile calls that Barnstable Police Officers deal with in stride on a daily/nightly basis. If so, local law enforcement is always looking for special, brave individuals who can handle these potentially grave extremes.

ABOVE: A plainclothes Barnstable Police officer stopped to check on a couple who fell off their e-bike early Wednesday morning. The male suffered a broken wrist and road-rash. The female escaped with just road-rash. A Hyannis Fire Department ambulance crew checked them out and provided first aid to the pair. They advised the male that he should come with them to the hospital for his broken wrist. But the male, likely concerned about racking up more of a bill to be footed by the taxpayers 😉 , politely declined the ambulance ride and had nearby friends come and collect both him and his female passenger, along with the e-bike. He told responders he would have someone drive him to the ER. The ambulance carefully fitted the injured man with a splint and a sling, while the woman received some first aid for her scrapes.

ABOVE: This man professed he had nothing to hide early this morning during a traffic stop. Plainclothes Barnstable officers working the east side of Hyannis must have believed him because they kicked him loose after a brief investigation.

ABOVE: A number of Barnstable Police patrol officers investigated a report of a suspicious man who left a parking space marker on the hood of someone’s vehicle parked at an apartment complex in the East End of Hyannis early this morning. Other than that, the East End was exceptionally tranquil and beautiful last evening. Hardly any traffic. The weather wasn’t too hot or sticky for a change. It was actually the first evening this summer where my dog and I could simply cruise the empty streets with the windows all down, no AC, just fresh air whistling through our whiskers.

Those of us working the overnights know how blessed we are to be seeing Hyannis at its best from time to time… in the hours before the rat race starts, with motorists flipping off total strangers in traffic. There’s very little road rage during the wee hours, even on those busy evenings. And it’s also a time when the usual unfriendly “Karens,” “Kens,” and “Barbies” are responsibly home in bed, dreaming about who they’re going to annoy tomorrow.

Seeing less of the Karens and their ilk is just one of the advantages of being a life-long creature of the night!

not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their own
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect
