KRISTY’S KORNER: Prom…
by Kristy Spinelli
It’s been 30 years since Kevin Bacon danced into our hearts in the 1984’s movie “Footloose.” For most of us we did not have the problem with our high school banning dancing but like any high school, prom comes with it’s share of drama…
Styles have changed…most girls are dressed as if they are competing for a global pageant, prices for a prom ticket rival that of a concert ticket, and we now have “lock-in” celebrations to ensure some safe alternative for the traditional “after parties” we all attended as high schoolers in the 80’s and 90’s. There are even some students bold enough to ask celebrities to attend their proms, some of them with great success.
What hasn’t changed is the excitement that surrounds prom. Kids go to great lengths now to ask a date to prom. No longer is there a simple phone call or an invite in the halls of the high school like we once had, but now renting a plane to pull behind a banner that reads “Will you go to prom with me?” is the norm.
Girls travel out of state and search online for that perfect dress– that was basically our entire wedding budget back in the day– just to make certain they have that “one-of-a kind” dress. After all it is the night to impress our peers that we have been with since preschool. Who cares if they just saw us at the mall eating a $5 Subway footlong…tonight is the night!!!
Hundreds of more dollars are shelled out for hair to be done, hundreds more for the newest and longest limo to be found to cram 10 of our closest friends in to ride the 2 miles to the local hotel and then a few hours later to be taken 2 more miles to the high school so we can be greeted by family member volunteers to run games and entertainment ’till the wee hours of the morning.
Even though some things have changed over the years, prom will always be something you remember forever…be safe, have fun and make this night the best night of the year!!!
