Little boy reunited with mom…
HYANNIS – A little boy took advantage of his new found summer freedom and took off on his bicycle this afternoon…
A concerned mom out strolling with her own family called police after she encountered a “lost 8-year-old boy” in front of the Sturgis Charter School on Main Street…
The boy was visibly upset when officers arrived, worried he was going to be in big trouble for wandering off without permission…
Police assured the boy they would put in a good word with his mom and that things were going to work out…
The boy and his bicycle were loaded into a police cruiser and driven just over a mile back to his home…
Police met with mom and explained…
The mom’s first reaction was to give her freewheeling son a big hug in the doorway of their home…
Whether or not the cops’ good words managed to spring the child from being punished is still uncertain…
The boy appeared very upset, however, and it’s very likely he learned a lesson…
Author’s note: Years ago it was perfectly acceptable for young adventurers to wander Hyannis by themselves, today not so much… Things have sadly changed since the 1960s and ’70s, when a boy could pack a lunch and take off for the afternoon, just as long as he made it home in time for dinner. (Please excuse the author’s lack of knowledge of what little girls did back in the 1960s and ’70s. Girls generally were not allowed, invited, or wanted to come along on our adventures… they were considered to be annoying and had Cooties, a very contagious disease spread by girl germs… Later in life, most boys developed an immunity to these germs, but back in the 1960s and ’70s little boys avoided girls like the plague. We built forts and treehouses… and hung signs which read “NO GIRLS ALLOWED.”)
