Mashpee Woman Charged with Drunk Driving After Hitting Motorcyclist at Osterville Light, Police Say

OSTERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS — A Mashpee woman was charged with operating under the influence after her sedan struck a motorcyclist stopped at a traffic light, Barnstable police said.
At least one of the officers working a traffic detail at Route 28 and South County Road saw the crash, according to police sources. The adult male motorcyclist suffered a leg injury believed to be non-life-threatening and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital by a Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills ambulance.
Police identified the driver as Margaret Hendricks of Mashpee, who is in her early 40s. She was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, speeding, failing to stop for a red light, and operating with an open container of alcohol in the passenger area.
Patrolman Kyle DeMello of the Barnstable Police Department, the investigating officer, found a plastic bag containing a dry brownish substance inside Hendricks’ sedan. Police seized the bag and its contents. Officials said it remains under investigation whether the material is an illicit drug.
A Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit photographed the scene, which included a sneaker belonging to the motorcyclist.
The incident remains under investigation. All potential defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
