One in custody after hit and run M.V.A…
Hyannis – According to Barnstable Police radio chatter a motor vehicle accident occurred near the west End rotary this afternoon.
The driver of the red vehicle in the above photo left the scene of the accident and drove East on South Street.
Patrolman Steve Everett spotted the fleeing vehicle near the intersection of Sea Street and South Street where he tried to initiate a traffic stop.
After several moments, responding officers were wondering whether they had a pursuit on their hands when the red vehicle was slow to pull over… it finally pulled over in front of Saint Francis Xavier Church at the intersection of High School Road and South Street… three blocks away.
According to radio chatter the male driver was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence… Hyannis Rescue was also summoned to evaluate an older gentleman who reportedly was a victim from the initial M.V.A… The injuries were obviously not serious as the older man was able to step up into the awaiting rescue all by himself.
The traffic stop occurred just as the St.F.X. 4pm mass was getting out and traffic was backed up for several blocks as police awaited a tow truck and finished investigating the scene.
After speaking with a Barnstable Police dispatch officer this evening, he was unable to confirm if there were additional charges to O.U.I…. He was also unable to confirm or deny whether or not they had the Bruins game on, but I know better… and would be surprised and extremely disappointed if they actually were not watching game two of the series… This is still America last time I checked and watching the Stanley Cup Finals when able or not too busy, whether on duty or not, is a God given right!
Go Bruins!
