COPPERS: “P.C., Resisting, A&B P.O…”
HYANNIS – I don’t care how drunk you are, it’s never a bright idea to resist one of our police officers.
Last night, at about 11:45pm, Barnstable Police responded to the notorious 149 Sea Street address, an address they visit just about every day.
There were reports of some type of disturbance in one of the units there. (So what else is new…)
Patrolman Troy Perry responded and observed a young man who was so drunk he was a danger to himself and others. Perry was simply placing the intoxicated individual in Protective Custody when the man began to lash out and resist.
According to police, the man tried to put up a fight but because he was so drunk it didn’t work out so well.
Kenneth Ludwig, age 27, was arrested and charged with Disorderly Conduct, along with Assault and Battery on a Police Officer. Ludwig will also be held in Protective Custody until he sobers-up (and hopefully smartens-up).
Patrolman Perry did not report being injured.
But he did now have to write an arrest report for the charges, when he initially simply just wanted to get a drunk man safely off the streets…
[HN notes: 1. Etymology of the term “copper.” Here’s my favorite explanation: According to the Urban Dictionary, “the term ‘coppers’ can be traced back to the early 19th century in New York City when the first police force, consisting of an eight man unarmed patrol unit, wore on their shirt an eight point copper badge to distinguish themselves as officers of the law. As a result, the general public started calling them coppers…”
2. All suspects in the U.S. are innocent until proven guilty.]
