Blown rod likely cause of Route 6 car fire… [VIDEO]
WEST BARNSTABLE – According to sources at the scene, the cause of last evening’s car fire is likely attributed to a piston rod suddenly bursting through the oil pan and onto the ground causing the engine compartment to ignite.
At about 7:00PM, West Barnstable Firefighters rushed to the burning Lexus which had pulled over onto the shoulder between Exits 5 & 6, just moments before becoming engulfed with flames.
The driver of the Lexus was traveling eastbound when he heard a sudden harsh clanking. After pulling off the road he noticed flames on the ground not far ahead of him. As he tried to back the car away, the engine compartment burst into flames.
The driver managed to escape unharmed.
The flames where quickly knocked down, but the entire engine compartment and front of the vehicle needed to be soaked for a period of time in order to get it cooled down.
The following footage highlights the scene shortly after firefighters put out the flames. It shows firefighters investigating a metal piece of the engine rod that is believed to have suddenly burst through the vehicle’s oil pan and onto the ground…
