South Yarmouth man arrested for trying to outrun police on homemade minibike that had no brakes… said he was just trying to have fun… [VIDEO]
HYANNIS – At about midnight last evening, police zeroed in on and caught a man who had tried to outrun them on a homemade minibike that had no brakes and flashlights taped to the handlebars, according to police sources…
The tiny fleeing minibike reportedly reached speeds of 45 MPH, on a road with a 30 MPH speed limit.
Police reportedly first noticed the homemade minibike traveling south on Sea Street, just prior to turning left onto South Street, where the speed limit is only 30 MPH.
Police were trying to stop the speeding minibike as it approached the intersection of South Street and Ocean Street. It was said to be passing and weaving between cars, nearly striking two cars, and forcing one vehicle onto the shoulder…
Squad cars and motorcycles were zeroing in on the fleeing minibike when it suddenly took a right onto Pleasant Street, where it reportedly doubled back and tried to shake police by driving on the sidewalk toward the Ocean Street docks…
Police were not fooled, as they reportedly closed in, finally stopping the minibike on the clam shell walkway behind Spanky’s Clam Shack, right next to the docks.
Sources say the driver resisted and even tried to kick one officer.
Alexander Cockerham, age 18, from South Yarmouth, was arrested and charged with Operating Recklessly so as to Endanger, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle, Operating Uninsured, Failure to Signal Before Turning or Stopping, Defective Equipment, and Resisting Arrest.
The minibike was photographed and towed from the scene. It was a homemade minibike with no identifiable make or model, no brakes, no headlight, no turn signals, etc… It basically had just a 212cc engine mounted on a frame, which powered a tiny chain driven rear wheel. It looked like a motorized clown bike, like the ones you see in parades.
Aside from the flashlights taped to the handlebars, and a small red rear-facing light taped under the seat, the homemade vehicle had no other forms of safety equipment…
Also, apart from speeding on a dangerous minibike that had a fuel tank fastened to the frame with zip ties, the driver was said to be wearing a safety helmet at the time of his arrest.
