TO CATCH A THIEF: K-9 TRACKS SCREEN-POP BURGLAR INTO MARSTONS MILLS WOODS
MARSTONS MILLS, MASSACHUSETTS — A burglar slipped into a River Road home through a popped rear window screen Saturday night while the owners were gone for barely two hours, grabbing jewelry and other keepsakes that meant far more to the family than they would on the open market.
Barnstable police officers arrived shortly after 9 p.m. after the couple returned and found their front door open. A quick check of the house revealed the rear window screen had been forced off — the suspected point of entry.
Investigators say the stolen items carried mostly sentimental value. A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit processed the scene for evidence.
A Barnstable Police K-9 unit then picked up a scent even though the break-in was already believed to be up to two hours old. The dog led officers into the woods behind the property, giving investigators a likely direction of flight. No suspect was found.
The case remains under investigation.
