HYANNIS – It was an intense foot chase which began during a traffic stop and ended inside Sears’ shoe department.

At about 5:30PM, Barnstable Police Street Crimes Officer Scott Wright was making what sounded like a routine traffic stop in the area of Sears Automotive next to the Cape Cod Mall. Just moments into the stop, Officer Wright found himself in an intense foot chase which took him across parking lots, down walkways, and into the mall, where Wright finally took the suspect into custody.

Wright, a veteran member of the Barnstable Police Street Crimes Unit, reacted quickly while managing to communicate his situation and location with fellow officers responding to assist. As you will hear in the following video, it was Wright’s composure and pertinacity (a quality found both in pit bulls and good police officers) which brought the chase to a safe conclusion.

Shawn Legeyt, age 33, the man who ran (wearing the Boston Bruins hoodie in the video), was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.

Reginald Winbush, age 45, of West Yarmouth, also had arrest warrants. According to sources, he was cooperative with police and did not run, raising his hands in the air and staying put when Officer Wright took off after Legeyt.

Both men were transported back to BPD Headquarters for booking and processing. The exact nature of the arrest warrants was not released at the time of this report.

PRESS RELEASE – 11/18/15

On 11/17/15 the Barnstable Police Detective Division was contacted by a postal delivery company concerning a suspicious package mailed overnight from Northern California to an address in Centerville. Det. Guiney took custody of the brown box and called Mashpee Officer Michael Assad and his Narcotics Detecting K9 Lola. Lola alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics in the package.

A controlled delivery of the package was made to the intended address by Barnstable Police Detectives. A female took custody of the package and brought it into her residence. A short time later, detectives observed a male, later identified as [37-year-old] Hyannis resident Shawn White, arrive at the home and take the package to his motor vehicle. After placing the package in the trunk of his car, White was stopped by detectives and members of the Street Crime Unit. Upon retrieving the original package from the car, detectives discovered two more similar packages in the trunk mailed to local addresses from California.

Inside each of the packages was special wrapping and containers designed to try and thwart a Narcotics K9 from smelling the 1 pound bags of marijuana that had been mailed in heat sealed freezer bags. A total of 16 lbs of marijuana valued at approximately $70,000 was found in White’s possession.

Shawn White was charged with Possession of Class D Substance (Marijuana) With Intent to Distribute. He was arraigned in Barnstable District Court and released on $500 bail.

Yarmouth Police and Alert Homeowner Team Up to Capture Daytime Burglar

On November 17, 2015 at approximately 12:02PM, the Yarmouth Police Department Dispatch Center received a 911 emergency telephone call from a person on Historic Brook Road in South Yarmouth reporting she had just arrived home to find an unknown male running out of her house through the rear door slider.

The male described as a black male wearing a red shirt and wearing a black back pack ran out of the home and then west on Historic Brook, south on Forest Road, and then right, into heavy brush, toward the rear of Alewife Circle. The homeowner had given chase on foot after the unknown male, but stopped as male ran into the woods, and called 911 to report the break into her house.

Yarmouth Police Department Patrol Officers Lou Nickinello, Jr., Nicholas Ambrosini, and David Dickey arrived in the area of Alewife Circle to look for the above described male. Within 10 minutes, Officer Ambrosini radioed dispatch reporting had located a subject matching the behind the main office of Swan Pond Village on Alewife Circle. The suspect was detained and identified as Jassel A. Garcia, age 17, of 126 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth.

Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Officers Manfredi and Roth arrived and processed the scene and provided evidence recovery services.

The victim of the crime subsequently positively identified the Garcia as the suspect and he was placed under arrest and transported to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters in West Yarmouth for booking. After the completion of booking, he was transported to the Barnstable District Court Juvenile Division for arraignment.

PAC UNIT ARRESTS FALMOUTH MAN FOR COCAINE

On the afternoon of Wednesday, November 18th, 2015, at 12:30 PM, Proactive Anti-Crime Unit Officer Christopher VanNess observed a white 2010 GMC Denali pickup truck parked at the dead end of Grove Street in West Yarmouth. This particular section of the street has seen a recent spike in litter from illegal drug activity (e.g. discarded syringes, rubber gloves, and cotton balls) and neighbors have reported their concerns.

There were four men in and around the vehicle acting suspicious.

PAC Unit Officer VanNess encountered the subjects and with the assistance of back up Officers Nick Ambrosini and Erica Wenberg, all four subjects were identified. All were known to police from previous encounters and all had previous illegal drug involvement.

An inspection of the truck revealed a small and opened clear corner cut baggie containing white powder between the front passenger seat and the center console which tested positive for cocaine.

One of the subjects was determined to be the owner of the cocaine and he was placed under arrest and transported to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters in West Yarmouth. He was processed and will be arraigned in the Barnstable District Court.

YPD STUFF-A-CRUISER FOOD DRIVE BREAKS ALL RECORDS!

The totals are in and the food drive on Saturday, November 14th was a tremendous success!

In just FOUR hours, the Yarmouth Food Pantry collected 4,900 food items with a value of approximately $11,343.00 and in addition; over $6,000 in cash and checks.

The staff at the Yarmouth Food Pantry and the men and women of the Yarmouth Police Department would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of the volunteers who braved the cold weather to help run the event and to all of the members of the community who generously donated.

The Yarmouth Food Pantry would also like to thank the members of the Yarmouth Police Department, Rotary Club of Yarmouth, Yarmouth-Dennis Cert, and the Dennis-Yarmouth Police Explorers.
