Two kayakers successfully rescued from Nantucket Sound… [Video]
HYANNIS – At about 5:07PM, Firefighters received a call from a Kalmus Beach supervisor about two kayakers in distress drifting further and further offshore… well out of range of beach lifeguards.
Hyannis FD launched one of their rescue boats and made their way from the Hyannis Inner Harbor toward the open waters just west of Point Gammon off Great Island.
According to one of the kayakers, one of their boats got away from them and caught up in a stiff offshore breeze… The two men jumped in the remaining tandem kayak and gave chase.
It took a while to catch up to their wayward craft, with the wind steadily driving them further and further from shore.
They tried towing the inflatable kayak after eventually catching up to it. But one of the men was becoming exhausted with trying to fight the wind back toward shore.
The men then tried to deflate the other boat and pull it aboard the tandem kayak. But the effort got them nowhere, and they were now drifting toward Nantucket Sound.
According to Captain Storie of the Hyannis Fire Department, neither of the two men had life vests.
Fatigue and unstable conditions could have changed the men’s circumstances in an instant…
At least one of the men was reported as being in the water prior the rescue boat’s arrival.
Both men and their kayaks were loaded aboard the rescue vessel and transported back to the School Street Docks in Hyannis.
An ambulance was standing by just in case, but neither man needed to be transported to CCH…
The brother of one the men arrived at the dock to assist the men with transportation for both them and their kayaks.
Both men were very glad the FD arrived when they did…
Offshore wind speeds were estimated to 15 to 20 MPH, more than enough to push the small kayaks out to sea…
The following HN video highlights the Hyannis FD rescue boat leaving the actual scene where the men and their boats were plucked from the sea. It then shows everyone safely arriving back at the Hyannis Inner Harbor docks at the end of School Street…
VIDEO NOTE: There was an annoying sound coming from one of the vessel docked at the end of School Street, you may want to lower the volume at certain points…
