VIDEO: Barnstable FD arrives safely back in harbor with patient…
BARNSTABLE – The following video shows Barnstable FD arriving safely back in harbor with a patient after a daring night rescue from a sailboat with a hole in its bow…
Just before 10pm, the patient was transported to CCH to be further evaluated for symptoms possibly related to hypothermia…
The Coast Guard and Barnstable Fire & Rescue were searching the waters of Cape Cod Bay, outside of Barnstable Harbor, for a 27 foot sailing vessel in distress.
Details are still developing, but the Coast Guard reportedly was trying to “secure” the vessel, which was said to have a hole in its bow. Barnstable Firefighters arrived at about the same time as the Coast Guard and assisted the male patient onto their Boston Whaler. There was nobody else on board the damaged sailboat…
Rescuers got to the man just in time as the conditions were reportedly beginning to turn rough…
The search had involved several other neighboring towns… and it had lasted for at least an hour or more… (the incident occurred at a time when several Mid-Cape first responder agencies where seemingly extremely busy… resources were overextended to say the least…)
The water, and the wind off the water, were said to be very cold and rescuers were concerned about the patient’s condition and the likelihood of hypothermia…
The patient was able to walk ashore along the dock without assistence, but shortly after being place inside the ambulance, the decision was made to transport him to CCH…
The following video highlights the safe arrival of the relatively tiny rescue craft back in Barnstable Harbor…

HN NOTE: On a side note, it seems like many people were having difficulty with technology and equipment last evening… call it the moon, the alignment of the stars, or whatever… batteries were seemingly dying quicker… and networks seemed to be much slower… HN and other first responders experienced battery related issues and needed to rely on backups or jump starts, etc… I’ve heard, mainly on late night talk radio, for what it’s worth, about such problems being possibly attributed to such things as “mercury retrograde,” etc… but I know very little about it… Feel free to politely comment on this subject in the comments below (Please note that I said “politely…”) Have a nice weekend and please be careful out there.
