*** WATCH *** Armed Suspect in Hyannis Pistol-Whipping Crashes...

WAREHAM, MASSACHUSETTS – A white BMW wanted in connection with a pistol-whipping in a Hyannis family neighborhood crashed after a police pursuit early Wednesday, and the driver — believed to be a 43-year-old Cape Cod man who is armed and dangerous — fled into nearby woods and remains at large.

Hyannis News was tipped off Tuesday afternoon about the assault, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the area of General Patton Drive. Sources said it happened in a residential neighborhood and may have been witnessed by a parcel delivery driver.

By about 1 a.m. Wednesday, police were already searching for a newer-model white BMW, described as a rental believed to be driven by a Cape Cod man in his early 40s. NOTE: Massachusetts law prevents official confirmation or release of a domestic-violence suspect’s name prior to arraignment.

Around the same time, police radio traffic indicated an active pursuit in the Wareham area. State Police ended the chase shortly after the vehicle left Route 25 at Exit 3, Glen Charlie Road. Moments later, officers reported the fleeing BMW had crashed near 12 Depot Street. The car was believed to be the same vehicle sought in a BOLO tied to the Hyannis assault.

The driver ran from the wreck into the woods. Over the next several hours, officers searched a large wooded area near the crash site. Drones picked up heat signatures that appeared consistent with a person hunkered down. Two K-9 teams tracked in the same area, but the signatures could also have belonged to wildlife. The lengthy search turned up nothing.

The suspect escaped on foot into the Wareham night and is still at large. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Hyannis News is working to obtain official details, which may not be released immediately because of Massachusetts law.
