*** WATCH *** MASHPEE MAN CHARGED W/ DRUNK DRIVING AFTER RUNNING FROM COPS, THEN CRASHING… [NEW DETAILS]
HYANNIS, Massachusetts – [NEW DETAILS] – According to an arrest report filed by Patrolman Eric Rogorzenski of the Barnstable Police Department, on the evening of Tuesday, December 12, he observed the suspect vehicle traveling east on Route 28 at a high rate of speed. At one point the vehicle reportedly crossed over the solid white fog line and accelerate to an estimated speed in excess of 100 miles per hour.
Patrolman Rogorzenski activated his blue emergency lights but the suspect vehicle reportedly failed to stop prior to “uncontrollably” turning onto Pitchers Way. The chase was quickly called off when the vehicle reportedly began traveling south toward West Main Street at a high rate of speed.
At some point, Patrolman John Gardiner of the BPD also engaged in the brief pursuit as the suspect vehicle reportedly turned onto Pitchers Way directly in front of his cruiser. He too activated his blue lights to stop the suspect vehicle, but it reportedly accelerated away from him at a “high rate of speed.”
Patrolman Gardiner reportedly observed the suspect vehicle crash into a sidewalk curb as it attempted to make an “abrupt right turn onto West Main Street.” The operator reportedly ignored commands to stop while attempting to flee the crash on foot. He was eventually taken into custody at gunpoint in a nearby ditch.
Patrolman Garndiner reportedly observed a second occupant flee from the crash scene, running south in the area of Pitchers Way. The second occupant was not captured.
The operator, Jerome Trent, 48, of Mashpee, was arrested and charged with Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Stop for Police, Marked Lanes Violation, Speeding, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Operating Under the Influence of Liquor. Trent reportedly stated several times that he was drunk, and that he took off from officers because he was drunk. Trent reportedly admitted that his friend was in the rear passenger seat during the crash, but that he did not know his name.
Trent was transported back to BPD Headquarters for booking. Bail was set at $2540.
A computer check revealed that Trent has a “significant” record out of Connecticut. Entries reportedly include, “several assault charges, possession to distribute narcotics, possession of an assault weapon and murder.”
HN NOTE: According to an April 2023 report in the Republican-American out of Connecticut, Trent was exonerated and released after spending two years in prison during a murder investigation. The charges against Trent were expected to be dropped, according to the article. CLICK HERE to read the report entitled “Waterbury police investigating murder after friends spent 2 years in prison”
