*** WATCH *** DRIVER RATTLED AFTER STRIKING POLE ON SEA STREET
HYANNIS – Barnstable Police are investigating what caused a driver’s vehicle to suddenly leave the roadway, jump a curb, and strike a utility pole on Sea Street last evening at around 10:30 p.m. The pole was completely destroyed, and the vehicle also sustained significant damage, ultimately needing to be towed from the scene. Sea Street had to be shut down to all passing traffic while crews worked the scene into the morning hours. Thankfully, there were no power outages in the area.
The driver was conscious, ambulatory, and fully able to communicate with everyone on scene. He announced he has never really been badly injured in past accidents he has been in; this is because he positions his seat back away from where the airbags deploy. He was evaluated and released by Hyannis Rescue.
The crash sent debris flying across a normally well-traveled sidewalk that fortunately did not have foot traffic late last evening.
UPDATE – As of 5:00 a.m., a Barnstable Police unit was still tied up on scene, as Sea Street in the area of Southgate Drive was still completely shut down to passing traffic, with a utility support pole still across the roadway and no signs of repair crews removing it anytime soon.
