*** WATCH *** UNATTENDED HOMELESS CAMP CATCHES FIRE…
HYANNIS – Barnstable police and Hyannis firefighters responded to Kalmus Beach on Ocean Street last evening for an unattended homeless camp that had caught fire in large wooded area.
As you will see in the following HN Video, arriving units could see black smoke billowing above the trees.
Officials flew a drone over the area to help pinpoint the uncontrolled fire. (A brush breaker truck would be needed if firefighters were unable to reach the flames on foot.) Conditions were very dry and time was a factor as the ocean breeze was beginning to pick up.
The fire was about 100 yards in from the parking area and it took firefighters a bit of time searching to find the right path into the right camp. The bulk of the fire was knocked down using extinguisher cans carried in on foot. A hose from the engine was eventually stretched through beach grass and a narrow path in order to thoroughly wet down the area.
The Barnstable Police and Hyannis Fire departments are investigating the situation.
The following HN Video highlights firefighters attempting to make their way into the scene.
