GOOD SAVE: Family safely evacuates West Barnstable structure fire…
WEST BARNSTABLE – At around 10:30 p.m. last evening, police and firefighters rushed to 897 Main Street/Route 6A for a structure fire. The first police officer on scene reported everyone (a family, including children) had made it out safely and the first firefighters on scene quickly reported that the flames on the outside of the home had already been knocked down…
… but apparently the fire had somehow made its way into an interior attic space.
A ladder truck arrived and firefighters began to tear through the shingles and plywood into an attic space in order to put out hot spots.
As you will see and hear in the following HN interview with Chief Joe Maruca of the West Barnstable Fire Department, there are no fire hydrants on that section of Route 6A and firefighters had to tanker in their own water. Speed of response was critical in keeping the damage to a minimum.
One source told HN that a young child saw the fire on the outside of the home and alerted the rest of the family. That information has not been official confirmed… but judging from the scene, had first responders not arrived when they did, things could have been much worse.
There were no reported injuries and damage to the home was kept to a minimum. Barnstable F.D. and Sandwich F.D. also responded to the scene…
