Who’s setting fires on Sea Street?
Hyannis – Talk about being in the right place at the right time…
… had just pulled over on Sea Street this afternoon because I saw a mom hitting her kid and I wanted to get a closer a look just to make sure it wasn’t abuse… it wasn’t. Although the mom was a bit aggressive, the child was not distressed and after their little sidewalk quarrel, mom and daughter held hands and continued on their walk back from the bus.
Just as I finished checking out the little sidewalk drama (which is typical for HyTown), I looked over across the street and saw flames in a little wooded area on the corner of Summerside Lane and Sea Street.
The fire wasn’t that big, but I had nothing to put it out with so I called 911. Nobody answered! Are you kidding me?
So I called the Barnstable Police, because I know that number by heart… they called Hyannis Fire Department. (the 911 people called back but I was already talking with BPD… they left a message saying to call back if I still had an emergency and needed their services… I was all set… – I’m not terribly impressed with our 911 service based on several call mishaps in recent years, but that’s a story for another day…)
Hyannis FD arrived and by that time the flames had died down. A passerby sacrificed his bottle of drinking water, that helped… After all, it really wasn’t a difficult brush fire. It wouldn’t normally be that big of a deal.
But this fire wasn’t a normal occurrence because according to one fire official it was the “fourth or fifth” time they had responded to brush fires in the very same wooded lot in just the past 3 weeks.
Someone set this fire and it’s a good thing people noticed this time and in the past. It certainly could have been worse.
Numerous matches were found on the sidewalk right near the burnt brush.
If you see anything suspicious in this area of Sea Street, make a note and pass that information along to police or fire officials.
