HN PHOTO: Driver uninjured after reportedly dozing off, hitting tree… [PLUS HN “PLEASE DRIVE EXTRA DEFENSIVELY” PSA]
WEST BARNSTABLE – Barnstable Police responded to the Service Road shortly after midnight this morning for a report of a single vehicle crash. Upon arrival officers confirmed the female driver was uninjured. She was the sole occupant. Her vehicle had significant front end damage and needed to be towed. There was airbag deployment. The crash was caused because the woman reportedly dozed off…
HN NOTE: Please be extra careful on the roadways. There have been a lot of major crashes lately. This morning’s crash could have been even worse had the driver veered into oncoming traffic. Please DRIVE DEFENSIVELY on Cape roadways. Please drive posted speeds. Half the battle is simply slowing down. Please assume other drivers may be either impaired or otherwise not in control of their vehicles due to a wide range of issues, including texting, reckless behavior, drugs, booze, medical emergency, etc.. Cars leaving the roadway or veering into oncoming traffic seems to be happening much more than normal. Many people have expressed they fear to visit certain Cape spots because of a worry about crime or violence, etc… but right now it appears reckless driving should be everyone’s main safety concern, by far! And these car crashes happen everywhere and anywhere, at any time of the day… and always when we least expect it. (I’m saying “expect it at all times…”) It appears, in my opinion, that innocent people are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed from some type of motor vehicle crash… much more so than any random act of violence. Impaired, reckless, or distracted driving has been putting more people in harm’s way far more than any time I can remember. It’s so bad right now I’ve been telling police officers, firefighters – and now I’m telling HN readers, “PLEASE DRIVE EXTRA DEFENSIVELY!”
[The aforementioned HN notes are my informed opinions. They are based on my daily observations of emergency radio traffic across all Cape Cod fire and police frequencies. They are based on witnessing these crash scenes first hand. They are based on having been around these local scenes for many years. Please be extra cautious out there on our shared roadways. Knuckleheads are knuckleheads, but the most tragic accidents I witness are when innocents are hurt. This message is mainly for the innocents (basically the “smart people,” in other words), please arm yourselves with an abundance of caution and alertness while driving around out there!]
