Barnstable SCU hunts down Mass Most Wanted suspect…
Actual Barnstable Street Crime Unit Press Release:
On August 26th, 2014, members of the Barnstable Police Department Patrol Division responded to a [past] larceny from Best Buy at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis. The female suspect approached a store employee in the electronics department. She claimed to be working for a non-profit charity group. She was interested in purchasing two (2) Microsoft tablets valued at $1300 each. At check out she told the cashier that because of her tax exempt status the tablets had already been paid for at Customer Service.
The female left the store quickly with the tablets. Store employees realized she did not pay for them and contacted Barnstable PD. A video image of the female was identified by Barnstable PD Detective Valerie Hemmila. The female, Danielle Scrima, age 39 of Malden, had used the same scam at the Toy R Us in Hyannis back in November of 2013. One that date, SCRIMA “charity/tax exempt ruse” was used again. She left the store with 3 IPOD Touch with a total value of $1200.00 dollars.
A follow up investigation by Hemmila resulted in identifying SCRIMA. She obtained an arrest warrant for her. At the time of the November theft SCRIMA was wanted by numerous police departments and store security departments from all over New England. She used the same
non-profit/tax exempt ruse to distract employees and steal thousands of dollars of high end electronics.
On 08/28/2014, Members of the Barnstable Street Crime Unit began looking for SCRIMA. It was learned that SCRIMA currently had twelve (12) outstanding arrests warrant in Massachusetts and five (5) outstanding arrest warrants from New Hampshire.
SCRIMA was also featured on the web site “Massachusetts Most Wanted”.
SCU member Barnstable Officer Scott Wright began looking into [Scrima’s] background in an attempt to find a current address. WRIGHT and Barnstable Patrolman Chris Botsford traveled to the greater Boston area. They checked addresses in Malden and Tewksbury Massachusetts for SCRIMA and/or information about her whereabouts. WRIGHT was able to develop information SCRIMA may be staying at an Andover, Massachusetts motel. WRIGHT, BOTSFORD and members of the Andover Police Department responded to that location. They located SCRIMA at the Andover motel. She was arrested without incident and transported back to the Barnstable Police Department. She was booked on twelve outstanding arrest warrants from Springfield, Marlboro, Framingham, Plymouth, Barnstable (Best Buy/Toy R Us incidents), Westborough, Cambridge, and Quincy District Courts.
She was also charged with being a fugitive from justice from the State of New Hampshire.
On 08/29/2014, SCRIMA was arraigned in Barnstable District Court and held on a $7,500 cash bail for her next court appearance on 09/30/2014.
