Initial HN report:
HYANNIS – At about 7:45pm, police and rescue rushed to the gymnasium at the Hyannis Youth Center after an 18-year-old suddenly collapsed while playing basketball. The young man was unconscious on the gym floor and had no pulse.
According to sources, police arrived first, grabbed a defibrillator, and administered one shock prior to rescue arriving.
Hyannis Rescue was close by and arrived right after police. Rescue workers started CPR as a medic called for a stretcher.
The young man was taken on a stretcher to an awaiting ambulance. Medics were still doing CPR and were using a LUCAS machine for compressions.
The ambulance had their dispatcher radio ahead to CCH to advise them of the situation. The patient was given a priority one status. He was said to be an 18-year-old male.
The teen was taken to CCH where he was pronounced dead.
Barnstable Police detectives arrived at CCH and were investigating. But, according to sources, there was nothing unusual or suspicious that may have prompted the teen’s sudden medical problem.
One witness told HN the young man had just arrived and started playing basketball about a half an hour prior to collapsing. He was playing defense as the play moved up court, when his friends turned and witnessed him suddenly collapse.
The 18-year-old is said to be a student at Barnstable HS. His name has not been released…
