BARNSTABLE VILLAGE – Barnstable Police, with the assistance of the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and a Massachusetts State Trooper, caught a suspect who had broken into a million dollar home last evening.
According to a source, the suspect was still inside the home and wearing boxer shorts when he was captured… [specific details are still developing… but it appears boxer shorts may have been all he was wearing…]
HN video footage right after the man’s arrest shows the suspect being transported back to BPD Headquarters and it appears as though he wasn’t fully dressed…
At about 10:05pm, a Barnstable Patrolman responded to an burglar alarm at 201 Scudder’s Lane. Details are still developing, but the Patrolman noticed there had been a break into the home. He also noticed what appeared to be the suspect’s backpack still at the scene. There was reportedly other evidence which indicated the suspect was still inside the residence.
Backup units, including a state trooper, immediately responded to the scene to set up a perimeter. A Barntable County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit responded from a neighboring town. The suspect was captured a short time after K-9 arrived.
Andrew Newman, age 25, of Watertown Ma, was arrested and charged with Breaking & Entering in the Nighttime, which is a felony.
The primary investigating officer was still documenting the details of his report at the time of this report. HN will provide additional details as they become available.
It is still uncertain what the suspect was doing inside the residence, or why he apparently was not fully dressed.
The assessed value of 201 Scudder’s Lane has averaged about one million dollars or more for the past ten years. The home sits on .88 acres located very near to the water, just footsteps away from Scudder’s Landing and Barnstable Harbor. The owners are listed as Michael Rafa & Kristen Hoft of Rye NY.
The owners were reportedly not home during the break… but were in contact with police just prior to the arrest and assisted by remotely turning off their audible alarm, which helped as officers searched inside for the suspect.
The following video shows the scene moments after the arrest. It focuses on the scene from the end of the long dark and narrow dirt driveway leading up to the property. The video pauses for moment on the suspect as he is being transported to BPD Headquarters in the back of cruiser…
