Customer drove into building… major gas main severed… Yarmouth Road closed… commuters suffered heavy traffic… [VIDEO]
HYANNIS – At about 2:45pm, a customer at Premier Cape Cod, a Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealership, backed into the building and severed a major gas main.
Yarmouth Road (the main access road between Exit 7 on Route 6 and downtown East Hyannis, which includes the ambulance route to CCH) was completely shut down for about an hour, making traffic conditions much worse. There were major traffic backups and delays. Commuters were frustrated… Ambulances were slowed, but allowed to pass…
At times, a strong odor of natural gas could be smelled as far as several blocks away.
Citizens were evacuated and kept away from the immediate area.
At about 3:45pm, National Grid managed to shut of the gas to the building at the street entrance to the facility. Traffic slowly returned to the usual congestion and delays along that route during that time of day.
There were no reported injuries.
The accident is being investigated by the Barnstable Police.
