BARNSTABLE – In a media statement today – 4/6/22 – District Attorney Michael O’Keefe announced that Jovanne Monteiro, age 31, pleaded guilty in Barnstable Superior Court to the following indictments:
1. Home Invasion,
2. Armed Burglary & Assault,
3. Assault to Maim,
4. Assault to Murder,
5. Mayhem,
6. Aggravated Assault & Battery with Dangerous Weapon
7. and six counts of Conspiracy.
The Honorable Raffi Yessayan sentenced Monteiro to 6-12 years in state prison, with 5 years probation from and after the committed prison sentence.
The indictments stem from a 2016 violent home invasion and brutal beating of the occupant while he was sleeping in his bed.
According to online September 2016 reports, Monteiro was arrested in connection to a man being attacked and brutally beaten with a crowbar in his Centerville home while he slept. According to a Cape Cod Times report, “Rescuers brought the man, who was seriously injured, to Cape Cod Hospital. When his condition began to deteriorate, he was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he underwent several surgeries for two brain injuries, a fractured hand, a lacerated liver and an eye injury…”
Alexa Fencher, a co-defendant, was accused of using her key to enter the victim’s condominium and leave the door unlocked for Monteiro and another man. Fencher is reportedly a relative of the victim and she had a restraining order to stay away from him at the time of the attack. Fencher pleaded guilty on December 2, 2021 and was sentenced to 8 to 10 years in state prison, with 3 years probation from and after the committed prison sentence, District Attorney O’Keefe said in today’s media statement.
The case was investigated by Barnstable Police with assistance from Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Nicole Manoog.
