Cops zero in on stolen sports car moments after it drove past owner…
Hyannis – A man had just reported his car stolen hours earlier when he suddenly spotted it driving by in the opposite direction…
Thursday evening the owner of a Toyota Scion FR-7 left the keys in his car as he quickly ran into AM-PM Convenience at Route 28 and Bearses Way, only to find an empty parking space upon his return…
Someone had stolen his car and he wasn’t happy about it…
… police were notified, reports taken.
It was a bright red newer model sports car and the owner wasn’t sure he’d ever see it again…
… until early this morning at about 12:45am when he saw it drive past him traveling the opposite direction on Pitcher’s Way.
The auto theft victim immediately contacted the Barnstable Police who alerted all cars in the area.
A perimeter was quickly coordinated from police headquarters, with police zeroing in on the stolen car’s likely location in the area of Pitchers Way, Bearses Way, and Route 132…
Moments later, responding officers were preparing for the possibility of a felony traffic stop or maybe even a pursuit when SCU member Officer Matt Blondin noticed a vehicle with its lights out, parked on a little dirt access road between Pitcher’s Way and Bearses Way, right near the Hyannis Elk’s Club…

It was the stolen Toyota Scion and officers knew the suspect(s) must be nearby… A new perimeter was set up as Patrolman Sean Roycroft and his K-9 partner Rocky hit the ground tracking.
Despite a rapid response and excellent coordination by the BPD supervisors and patrol officers, along with at least one Massachusetts State Trooper, this morning’s dragnet didn’t pan out…
Back at the scene the vehicle was processed for finger prints and other evidence. One investigator even went as far as finding out the owner’s taste in music, which happened to be Latin music, so they could check the CD player and any other CDs that didn’t belong for fingerprints.
Police also discovered the keys still inside the vehicle, along with two black backpacks not belonging to the car’s owner… a digital scale was also discussed as not belonging to the owner. Police found other evidence and it is believed the thief was unaware he was being pursued when he abandoned the stolen Scion… likely hoping to return and use the vehicle another time…
The thief appeared to be familiar with the immediate area and quite possibly lives nearby…
Officers were impressively thorough, and with the large amount of well preserved evidence and information, police are confident they will eventually ‘get their man.’
Note: It is very unwise to leave your keys inside any car in any part of HyTown, especially in the area of Route 28 and Bearses Way… The only people who should ever leave a car running with the keys in it in that area are the police when they set up one of their bait cars.
