Cyclists Collide Head-On; Alleged Wrong-Way Rider Left Bleeding in Middle of Hyannis Main Street [HN Photos]

HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — Two cyclists collided head-on on Main Street near Winter Street around 10:20 p.m. Thursday, leaving both with head lacerations and one rider still down in the middle of the roadway when Barnstable Police and a Hyannis Fire Department ambulance arrived.
Both Main Street lanes were shut down while crews treated the injuries. The cyclist found in the street suffered the more serious head laceration and had lost a significant amount of blood. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital. The second rider, who had a less serious head laceration, was treated at the scene and released.
The rider with the more serious injuries had reportedly been traveling the wrong way after turning onto Main Street when the bikes collided. He was on a regular pedal bicycle. The rider treated and released was on an electrically assisted bicycle, or e-bike, he told HN he had been heading home. Barnstable Police handled the report.
The crash came hours after an e-bike traveling the wrong way on Main Street nearly collided with a Hyannis News vehicle. The night before, a Barnstable patrol officer tried to stop an e-bike riding down the middle of Bearses Way; the rider refused to stop, and a very brief pursuit was called off for public safety. A police supervisor who joined that investigation said over the radio that officers needed to start identifying these reckless riders.
There has been considerable talk about regulating e-bikes and electric scooters after numerous serious crashes across the state, though it remains uncertain when any such rules will take effect.
