DEVELOPING: Fleeing B&E suspect left his cellphone on roof outside point of entry…
HYANNIS – At about 5:15am this past Friday, Patrolman Kieth Sexton responded to an alarm at the Olde Cape Cod Insurance building located at 296 Winter Street. Sexton had no way of knowing the call would turn out to be anything but ‘routine.’ And he definitely had no way of knowing he’d still be working the same caper well into the following afternoon, and then some…
It was a blaring alarm and Sexton could suddenly be heard announcing he was in foot pursuit just moments after beginning to investigate.
Sexton was chasing a black male, blue shirt, black backpack, and short hair, running south in the direction of North Street. The suspect had just jumped out a second story window back at the alarm scene, and was moving “real fast” according to Sexton.
Dispatch quickly coordinated responding squad cars. A perimeter was soon in place. A K-9 unit also responded from one of the outer villages. Taxi cab companies were contacted in the event of a recent pickup in the area. Other cars were directed to maintain a roving patrol of the area. Additional units moved into positions near sector lines in case they were needed. The area was well covered, yet the speedy suspect still managed to remain free. And it appeared as though he was going to get away…
While patrols were in place and still searching, Patrolman Sexton doubled back to check and secure the scene. The alarm was still sounding when he announced the suspect had dropped a cellphone on the roof just outside of the second story window he had jumped from.
It was an entirely new ballgame.
According to sources, the cellphone led investigators to an Audi A6. Police eventually had addresses and other leads. Things were beginning to fall into place.
Hours later, investigators knocked on a door at 255 Winter Street and found 3 males sleeping. Suspects were hauled in for questioning.
A man named Krymeii Fray was taken into custody and charged with the nighttime B&E at the Olde Cape Cod Insurance building. But the investigation didn’t stop there…
According to police, the investigation that developed from the dropped cellphone revealed several other recent breaks.
Information from the Olde Cape Cod Insurance B&E helped solve another separate break where about $50,000 in undisclosed cash or valuables had been stolen.
Details are still developing as patrol officers and detectives wrap up their investigations.
HN held onto the story for the weekend as officers continued to work the case.
HN will provide further details and updates to this story as police are ready to release them.
Stay tuned…
