KRISTY’S KORNER: To Vote or Not to Vote?
Every time we stop at a busy intersection we are reminded that Election Day is just around the corner…2 weeks around the corner to be exact!! Political signs are pounded into the ground or held by frantic, smiling faces who wave to us in hopes to hear a beep of your horn or a wave back in support. As we walk into a grocery store we are greeted by yet other supporters wanting to hand you information about their candidate or if they are lucky grab you for a few minutes to discuss with you about the important views to change the world as we know it.
There are lots of excuses why we don’t vote. It’s not convenient, we don’t like the candidates, we didn’t register, simply too busy or not knowledgeable about anything on the ballot, apathy…
Is voting a forgotten privilege? Are we not honoring our history?? Are we allowing an older generation to go to the polls and decide important things for OUR own children who CAN’T even vote?? Who is looking out for the next generation of voters?? Voting is our chance to make a difference in our own lives and within our world. It’s a way to speak your mind and let your voice be heard.
You should vote because:
1. You can get one of those special “I Voted” stickers.
2. If you don’t exercise the right to vote, you’ll be a hypocrite when you complain about politics (this includes healthcare and financial aid).
3. You vote for your favorite TV show, non-profit org, and sports team all the time.
4. Whether you’re from the The Rent is too D@#^ High Party or the Tea Party, you live in a country where every voice can be heard. Exercise your right.
5. Politicians decide our financial future – how much government support we’ll get for college tuition, how many jobs will be available, and who will pay more taxes.
6. Only about 30% of voters will go to the polls today. If you go, that will make you cooler than 2/3 of the population. Not that you weren’t cool already…
7. We need more sane people on the news. Reporters might be interviewing people at the polls, and right now, no matter your political party, it seems like the news only shows the most extreme protesters and activists. This is your chance to represent the sane!!!
8. Your grandparents will vote, and they’ll cast their ballots based on social security and Medicare. Are you gonna let Grandma out-do you?
9. When guys turn 18, they have to register for the draft. If you’re expected to defend your country, you should have a say about how it is run.
10. You need to beat out the single-issue voters. Seriously, some people only vote based on who supports one issue, kind of like how tween girls dominate the votes for the TV shows and who they think is the cutest.
Tuesday, NOVEMBER 4th is YOUR day to stand and be counted…one vote really does count!!!!
