DRIVER FLED AFTER CRASHING INTO ANTIQUE FIRE TRUCK, OLD CHEVY, & OLD GARAGE [NEW DETAILS]
UPDATE – 12/19/2023:
According to a report filed by Patrolman Jason Bernardo of the Yarmouth Police Department, on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at around 1:30 a.m., he was dispatched to Old Main Street for a motor vehicle crash where the operator fled the scene on foot. Upon searching the area, officers located the suspected operator in the area of Breezy Point Road. The suspected operator was eventually identified as Richard Bass Jr.
Patrolman Bernardo’s report continues as follows:
“I exited my cruiser and stood by while Sergeant Lundegren spoke to him. I immediately noticed his eyes were glossy and blood shot. When he spoke, his speech was slurred and I could smell the odor of alcoholic beverage. He attempted to articulate to us that his father is going to be mad at him for crashing the vehicle. He continued saying that he only had “two beers” but he wasn’t drunk. He admitted to driving the vehicle, crashing the vehicle and fleeing the scene. He informed us that there were no other occupants.”
Bass reportedly lost his balance and failed to walk in a straight line during field sobriety testing. He was subsequently arrested and transported back to YPD Headquarters for booking. A breathalyzer reportedly indicated his blood alcohol content to be 0.15.
Richard Bass Jr., 22, of South Yarmouth, was charged with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle on a Public Way (expired license), Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage, Speeding, and Marked Lanes.
