DRIVER FLED CRASH SCENE: Woman in other vehicle taken to CCH… investigation is ongoing… [VIDEO]
YARMOUTH – Police are looking for the driver of a black Ford Taurus who fled the scene of a serious crash which sent a woman to CCH.
At about 10:47PM, police and firefighters responded to an area of Buck Island Road just west of Winslow Gray Road for reports of an accident involving two or three vehicles. One vehicle was said to be in the woods.
Police arrived and observed that two vehicles had collided, one a black Ford Taurus, the other a Toyota that was off the road but not quite in the woods… The vehicles were traveling in different directions and came to a stop about 100 yards apart after impact.
Rescue was immediately called for the female passenger of the Toyota. Air bags had deployed, but a cracked windshield indicated she likely struck her head… One source indicated her injuries were not believed to be life threatening at the time she was transported to CCH. There was no mention of a Medflight, which is always a positive sign…
Police also learned that the driver and perhaps another occupant of the black Ford Taurus fled the accident scene, leaving their vehicle in the middle of the roadway.
A Yarmouth Police K-9 was quickly deployed and a search ensued in a cranberry bog just north of the accident scene.
Two Massachusetts State Police cruisers arrived. One trooper assisted with shutting down Buck Island Road. The other trooper assisted searching for the occupants of the Taurus.
During the search, officers received a report of man with a shaved head in the area. He was said to be wearing black pants and bleeding. He reportedly was observed trying to hide, at one point behind a grill to the rear of an address on Lake Road West.
A Yarmouth Ambulance staged in the area in case needed.
According to radio transmissions, it remains unclear whether there were two occupants that fled from the Taurus… or else just the one driver.
Both vehicles needed to be towed from the scene. The black Ford Taurus was towed back to Yarmouth Police Headquarters to be further processed for forensic evidence. The YPD have not officially commented on the type of evidence they are working with, but according to radio transmissions, DNA was discussed…
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Yarmouth Police Department, with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police.
No further information was available at the time of this report.
