Elderly Couple Safe After Accidentally Driving into Hyannis Harbor [Plus Other HN Photos…]
WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS – In an alarming incident that could have ended in tragedy, an elderly couple from out of town found themselves entering dangerous waters after accidentally driving their pickup truck onto Bayview Beach and partially into Hyannis Harbor last evening. Thanks to vigilant police monitoring and a swift response, the pair emerged unscathed.
Yarmouth Police were fortunately paying attention to their Bayview Beach parking lot camera when they spotted a troubling sight: a Toyota Tacoma partially submerged at the harbor’s edge. Within minutes, a Yarmouth patrolman arrived on scene to discover the disoriented seniors in a precarious spot. The couple, unfamiliar with the area, had somehow navigated from the parking lot directly onto the beach – a path made all too easy by the absence of any gate or chain to block vehicle access. From there, it was just a matter of yards to the deep channel at the mouth of the Hyannis inner harbor. And it’s a good thing the pickup didn’t fully make its way into the channel.
First responders’ top priority was the couple’s safety. The woman was seated on the passenger side and needed to be carefully maneuvered over the center console before firefighters could carry her across the sand to firmer, drier land. Once safely off the beach, the pair were ushered into a police cruiser to warm up. Thankfully, neither suffered any injuries.
Authorities arranged a ride for the couple while firefighters teamed up with a tow truck operator from Midcape Collision to carefully remove the stuck Toyota Tacoma from the water’s edge, preventing any further damage.
This close call highlights how a simple wrong turn in an unfamiliar area can lead straight into hazardous waters. Thankfully, the police department’s vigilant monitoring of camera surveillance and rapid response averted a potential disaster. This incident also prompts questions about whether a chain or gate is needed to prevent vehicles from driving onto the beach at the end of Bayview Street.

ABOVE: A 24-year-old motorcyclist was reportedly banged-up after losing control and crashing on Main Street in Hyannis early this morning. Shortly after 1:00 a.m., police and firefighters responded to the area near the intersection with South Street following reports of a single-vehicle motorcycle crash. Responders found the driver alert and conscious, and he was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. The man’s motorcycle was towed from the scene. The Barnstable Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
