SUDDENLY: Flames burst out… yacht club evacuated… [Video captures all the action…]
HYANNIS – Flames suddenly burst out outside the kitchen & loading dock area of the Hyannis Yacht Club today…
HN NOTE: At about 1:30pm, I was walking my dog toward Veteran’s Beach and when I looked over my shoulder, it looked like the yacht club was catching on fire. Others noticed as well and immediately called 911. I ran back to my truck to secure my dog and grab my camera… HN was on scene and rolling as Hyannis Firefighters arrived to quickly stop the flames from spreading further.
Staff at the HYC also quickly took notice and began evacuating members from the building, some of whom were elderly and right in the middle of eating lunch…
According to Lieutenant Thomas Kenney of the Hyannis Fire Department, the fire was started by the “careless disposal of smoking material.” The fire was wind fed and quickly caught on to cardboard boxes, fencing, and other items in the area of the dumpsters. The stiff breeze and plenty of surrounding burning material could have caused the fire damage to have been much worse, if it were not for witnesses quickly contacting the fire department. The damages are said to be approximately $10,000…
A Hyannis Yacht Club security camera captured the entire fire from start to finish. It was definitely caused by a cigarette butt… It’s being considered as an accidental fire which could have been prevented with the more careful disposal of cigarette butts.
There were no reported injuries…
