*** FLASH *** HYANNIS WRECK: TREE STRIKE CRUMPLES PICKUP CAB, DRIVER BADLY HURT [HN VIDEO]
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] – A man (described as being approximately 42 years old) was seriously injured in a violent crash early this morning when his pickup truck slammed into a tree near the intersection of South Street and Pearl Street at around 1:15 a.m. The explosive impact, estimated at 40 to 50 miles per hour, left the truck’s cab crumpled with a staggering two feet of intrusion (according to radio transmissions) which prevented the doors from opening, trapping the driver inside.
Barnstable Police and Hyannis Firefighters arrived all at once, in a swarm, shutting down South Street and rerouting traffic away from the area. Witnesses reported hearing the crash from blocks away.
First responders urgently worked to free the driver, who was conscious but suffering severe lacerations to his head. The following Hyannis News video footage shows firefighters and paramedics hustling to extract the man from the wreckage. Despite his injuries, the driver was able to speak with rescuers as they carefully maneuvered him onto a stretcher. According to radio transmissions, paramedics noted stable vitals on scene but grew concerned after discovering an additional head wound. The driver was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, though his current condition remains unclear at this time.
The Barnstable Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash, with a member of the sheriff’s crime scene unit documenting the wreckage. South Street was closed for a period of time as responders cleared the scene.
