WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS — The bellowing mini-golf hippopotamus statue at Wild Animal Lagoon escaped serious injury late Thursday when a Toyota sedan left the roadway, struck a curb, lost its wheel assembly and slid sideways along Route 28 for well over 200 feet before crashing through a fence and scratching the hippo’s chin.

The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. Yarmouth police and firefighters responded.

When Hyannis News arrived, the driver of the Toyota was standing and speaking with the investigating patrol officer. The car was registered in Florida, and the driver presented a Florida driver’s license. He then walked to a stretcher, was wheeled to a nearby Yarmouth Fire Department ambulance and was later taken to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation.

Police said the crash remains under investigation and that the driver is facing criminal motor vehicle charges. No further details were available at the time of this report.
