UPDATE FROM THE YPD:
ALERT DOG AND CITIZENS HELP YPD ARREST TWO FOR FELONY BREAK-INS
On Thursday, September 20, 2018 at approximately 3:48AM, Yarmouth Police Department Midnight Shift Patrol Officers and Supervisors were dispatched to Daggett’s Liquors located on Route 28 in South Yarmouth for a silent Burglar alarm.
Police Officers arrived and found a broken window on the east side of the building. A Yarmouth Police K9 Unit was requested and a perimeter established.
At approximately 4:28AM, while Police Officers were searching and investigating the B&E to Daggett’s Liquors, a 911 caller reported that his dog barking woke him up and he observed two youths breaking into his shed and stealing his motor scooters.
Police Officers responded to a home on Locust Street and began to look for the suspects. The reporting party stated that the youths fought with him and his wife and then ran off down the road, one towards Run Pond Road, the other towards Route 28.
At 5:08AM, a local news reporter Robert Bastille of Hyannis News alerted YPD that a suspect matching the description was located at Brentwood Condos on Route 28.
A nearby Yarmouth Police Officer on a road construction detail also responded and detained the suspect who was identified as Christopher Johnson of Commercial Street in South Yarmouth. He was placed under arrest and brought back to YPD Headquarter for booking.
At 5:32AM, Yarmouth Police Officers conducted a follow up at Johnson’s home.
As Police Officers were speaking with a group of people at the home, Keean Laakso walked in the front door from outside. He was wearing a black sweatshirt with black shorts, carrying a backpack. He was soaking wet and his shorts were ripped.
A ‘Pat Frisk’ type of search located an airsoft gun in his waistband. The gun was removed from his waistband and secured.
A ‘Show Up’ line up was conducted and the Laakso was identified as the second suspect.
Laakso was placed in handcuffs and transported to YPD Headquarters
Inside the backpack he was carrying were several bottles of alcohol stolen from Daggett’s.
Both suspects held and transported to the Barnstable District Court for arraignments.
The Yarmouth Police Department commends the work of all of the Police Officers and Police Dispatchers involved, as well members of the Massachusetts State Police, and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit for their assistance.
We also commend the work of the business owner who had installed an Alarm system, the alert canine, the citizens, and the news reporter who assisted in making these important arrests.

Initial HN coverage:
YARMOUTH – [DEVELOPING] – As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, a HN camera was rolling when officers captured one of their B&E suspects…
Shortly before 4:00 am this morning, Yarmouth patrol officers surrounded Daggett’s Liquors on Route 28 after receiving a “glass break” alarm.
One of the first officers on scene confirmed a broken store window and a K-9 unit was immediately called to the scene to assist in searching the store.
As officers were searching Daggett’s Liquors, Yarmouth Police received reports of another B&E in progress at a nearby residence on Locust Street.
(It is believed the two B&Es may be related…)
Several officers had to break away from the initial scene and respond to Locust Street where at least two, maybe three, suspects were said to be fleeing from the area.
As you will see in the following HN Dashcam Footage, HN was in the area of Locust Street when one of the suspects was spotted walking away from the alleged scene of the crime. Yarmouth officers took that suspect into custody on Route 28, across the street from The Pancake Man restaurant.
A second suspect was reportedly taken into custody a short time later. [DEVELOPING]
No further details were available at the time of this report. Please check back later for official updates.
