HN PHOTOS: Hard work, sea scallops… and a gift of life…

HYANNIS – It took the crew of the Hotate about 30 hours to bring in this morning’s haul. The scallops came from a fishing ground well east of Nantucket. Back at the Ocean Street docks, the catch was loaded onto a truck, bound for Gloucester. The Hotate is part of a larger fleet, which is mostly owned out of Gloucester. According to online sources, Hotate is Japanese for scallop, and as a dish it’s eaten either raw or broiled. In Chinese, the characters for “hotate” mean “raise a sail,” according to another online source. The Captain of the Hotate is from Cape Cod. The truck driver, relatively new to the fishing game, is from just south of Gloucester. It’s hard, non-stop work that’s well worth it when everyone arrives home safely with a decent catch.
