*** LISTEN *** POLICE RADIO TRAFFIC PRIOR TO FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH
HYANNIS – [HN NOTES] – The following is police radio traffic captured on a Hyannis News recorder yesterday afternoon – Sunday, June 11, 2023. According to the audio and a press release from the Barnstable Police Department, at around 1:41 p.m., a Barnstable Police patrolman radioed that he was attempting to pull over a motorcycle on Route 28, in the area of the Barnstable Department of Public Works. According to the BPD, the attempted stop was for a traffic violation. Moments into the encounter, the patrolman suddenly announced that the motorcycle was failing to stop for him. According to the audio, the patrolman had his sirens activated as he announced the motorcycle had turned onto Bearses Way and proceeded to flee north in the area of U-Haul. In the following audio, you can hear a police sergeant order the patrolman to discontinue the apparent pursuit. All of this seems to have occurred within a matter of seconds, over a distance of about a quarter of a mile. Moments after the pursuit being called off, the patrolman announced that the motorcycle had crashed head-on with a vehicle on Bearses Way, near the intersection with Enterprise Road. From the codes and sound of the audio, it sounded as if the motorcyclist’s condition was critical. According to the BPD statement, “The operator of the motorcycle was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by a Hyannis Fire Department ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased.”
The BPD’s media statement continues: “The operator of the vehicle struck by the fleeing motorcycle sustained minor injuries in the accident. The crash is being investigated by the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team. The identities of the individuals involved in this incident, including the decedent, are being withheld pending further investigation.”
