INITIAL HN REPORT:
MASHPEE – According to Chief Scott W. Carline of the Mashpee Police Department, yesterday – Monday, November 22, 2021 – at approximately 5:47 p.m., his officers received multiple reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Route 28 in the area of Orchard Road.
The first officers on scene found a female victim down in the roadway with what appeared to be life-threatening injuries after being struck by possibly two vehicles traveling westbound on Route 28.
Both drivers remained on scene and were said to be cooperating with the investigation.
The victim is a 91-year-old Mashpee woman, according to Chief Carline.
As you will hear in the following HN Video, the victim suffered multi-system trauma and ended up being transported directly to Falmouth Hospital instead of being immediately Medflighted because she eventually became not stable enough to fly.
The cause of the car vs. pedestrian crash is actively being investigated by the Mashpee Police Department, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office and Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Unit.
Route 28 needed to be completely shut down between Sampsons Mill Road and Orchard Road for over four hours as officials investigated.
As Route 28 was being reopened, two vehicles being investigated were towed from the scene to Mashpee Police Headquarters, according to police radio transmissions.
The following HN Video contains Mashpee FD emergency radio transmissions, along with several photographs of the scene as it was being documented by accident reconstruction experts.
The victim was considered to be in critical condition at the time of this report. HN will update this story with official updates as they become available.
