The following is the actual YPD media statement:
POLICE INVESTIGATE MAN INJURED AND KILLING OF DOG
On Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 6:08PM, Yarmouth Police Officers and Firefighters responded to an emergency 911 call reporting a man had been bit by his dog and the subsequent killing of the animal at a home on Woodbine Avenue in West Yarmouth.
First Responders arrived and found a 25 year old man with severe wounds to his left arm and a Pitbull Terrier dead.
The man was treated at the scene and transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
The on-scene investigation revealed that the man and his girlfriend had recently moved in to their new home and were newly fostering a Pitbull Terrier named Max.
All three were lying in bed and the dog attacked and repeatedly bit the man when he tried to move him. The man tried to get the dog to stop but he would not. The man then reached in to his nearby nightstand and used his 9MM handgun to shoot the dog. The single shot stopped the attack and the dog died shortly afterwards.
The man is fully licensed to have firearms in Massachusetts.
The 9mm handgun, a 12 gauge shotgun, and related ammunition were removed from the home for safekeeping at Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters.
The deceased dog was removed by Yarmouth Animal Control Officials.
The investigation is ongoing by Yarmouth Police Detectives with support from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit.
