SHELTER UPROAR: New no shower policy has some homeless riled… [VIDEO]
HYANNIS – People outside wanted a shower and they wanted it NOW!
At about 5:30PM, police responded to the NOAH Shelter at 77 Winter Street for a disturbance. HN arrived soon thereafter…
Some homeless, particularly one young woman, were upset about a new policy that, according to them, banned them from taking showers.
According to some of the homeless, up until today, people had been allowed to use the showers at the facility during certain hours, even when they were not staying there…
Most of the angry individuals complied when police asked them to leave or calm down. However, one woman was hot, bothered, and had had enough. She was fed up and invoked her constitutional rights as she stood in front of the shelter letting them know exactly how she felt. The unfortunate part was that she went a little too far, becoming volatile, spitting mad, and disturbingly unruly.
After having been given a chance to leave and cool off, Kaileen Crane, age 27, homeless in Hyannis, decided to ignore police and was subsequently taken into custody for Disorderly Conduct.
HN had the opportunity to speak with some of her friends after the outburst. They explained that some in the homeless community were upset with the way things have been run at the NOAH Shelter. Several told HN they’d rather live in the woods than be subjected to what they say is an overcrowded, overbearing, and unnecessarily restrictive environment.
Although they recognized their friend had perhaps went too far… they also felt her anger and frustration. Once on the streets, it’s a tough road back. A little thing like a shower means a lot…
It was a hot afternoon and people were uncomfortable. When some were denied the opportunity to shower it touched off a torrent of pent-up frustration…
Some of the homeless impacted by today’s alleged policy change have agreed to meet with HN away from the shelter’s campus to express their concerns on camera… (Stay tuned as HN plans to provide insights into these individuals’ side of the story and circumstances.)
The following video captures today’s frustrations as they reached their pinnacle. The video highlights the call, and some of the events leading up to Ms. Crane’s arrest… It begins with dash cam video and then switches over to higher definition.

Lyrics:
“Under Pressure”
Pressing down on you, no man ask for
Under pressure that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming, “Let me out!”
Tomorrow gets me higher
Pressure on people – people on streets
These are the days – it never rains but it pours
People on streets – people on streets
What this world is about
Watching some good friends
Screaming, “Let me out!”
Tomorrow gets me higher, higher, higher…
Pressure on people – people on streets
Sat on a fence but it don’t work
Keep coming up with love but it’s so slashed and torn
Why, why, why?
Can’t we give ourselves one more chance?
Why can’t we give love that one more chance?
Why can’t we give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love?..
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves
This is our last dance
This is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure
Under pressure
Pressure
