Pit Bull gets loose, kills Yorkie… [Updated]
Update 12/4/2013 6:30pm: Shortly after 2:15pm today Animal Control Officers confiscated a brown pit bull from 17 Thach Lane… The pit bull is said to have escaped and killed a Yorkshire Terrier… The owner of the large breed terrier was not at the residence when officials showed up to take the dog… Several Barnstable Police Units provided security for the Animal Control Officers… police also escorted the Animal Control van out of the area… the dog was taken to an undisclosed location where it will be quarantined…

The Cape Cod Times is reporting that the Yorkie was bitten and actually died in the arms of its owner.
The pit bull owner’s name is David Henning and his dog will be held until a hearing determines what to do about the situation…
The following photos show the fenced in area that the pit bull owners trusted to contain their dog… a determined pit bull could easily fit through any one of these holes…

Original story:
Hyannis – At approximately 4pm, the man in the above photo was out walking his Yorkshire Terrier when a young Pit Bull charged through a hole in a fence from 17 Thach Lane…
The man picked up the smaller Yorkie and tried to protect it… but the Pit Bull grabbed the dog in his hands and quickly killed it.
The owner of the Yorkshire Terrier was not bit.
Police arrived and immediately summoned Animal Control Officers.

A brief conversation with the handler of the Yorkie revealed that his daughter was also its owner and she did not yet know that her pet had suddenly been killed. It was a very sad scene…
… the Yorkshire Terrier was 7-years-old.
Residents of 17 Thach Lane were also very distraught…
… but then suddenly the young male owner of the Pit Bull came recklessly barreling around the corner in a small red pickup truck… coming dangerously close to officers who were standing out in the street.

Police Officers were not impressed and told him to calm down, in so many other words…

The owner of the Pit Bull reportedly received a $25 citation from Animal Control for a leash law violation.
The Pit Bull will also be quarantined at 17 Thach Lane for a period of 10 days to insure it does not show signs of rabies…

It is not yet known whether Animal Control will take further actions…
Side note about Pit Bulls and large terrier breeds:
Although Pit Bulls are very friendly to humans under normal conditions, they are a terrier breed. Terriers are powerful hunters who typically have little tolerance for other animals. They historically were bred to hunt and kill smaller animals, such as vermin…
I have raised strong terriers all my life. It’s a job I do not take lightly and I cringe when I see irresponsible young owners with larger terriers, such as Pit Bulls…
Pit Bulls, like all terriers, need constant care and training and are not for people who cannot make the time commitment. They are high energy dogs and need long daily walks in order to be happy and well adjusted. They also constantly need to be socialized with other animals in a controlled manner.
It is not recommended to leave a Pit Bull tied out or fenced in unsupervised for a long period of time. If neglected, their hunter instincts will kick in and they will try to go after other animals. Especially smaller animals, even other terriers…
In general, Pit Bulls and larger terriers make engaging family pets. They were bred to be loving companions for their humans, while keeping the farm free of smaller pests and critters…
… but they are definitely not for everyone. They especially require owners with a high level of determination and commitment to offset their lively characters.
If you have a macho attitude and cannot at least back it up with being a responsible handler who walks, trains, and cares for his dog… in other words, if you’re a punk who merely wants a Pit Bull to look tough, please, do NOT get this breed. Pit Bulls and members of the community deserve better than irresponsible handlers with bad attitudes.
Please choose your pets wisely. You’ll be happier and so will your pet.
