RAW VIDEO: Brewster man got out just before his car burst into...

BARNSTABLE – An elderly man from Brewster is feeling very fortunate tonight as he managed to pull over and get out of his vehicle just in the nick of time, as it was catching on fire while driving along the Mid-Cape highway…

At about 9:30PM, a man was driving east on Route 6 between Exits 6 & 7 when he heard a loud pop, then smoke gushed out from under the hood. He managed to pull over to the breakdown lane and quickly bailed out… his vehicle then burst into flames.

Three young women traveling not far behind stopped to help the man reach safety… (They also stood by with the man until the fire was put out.)

Massachusetts State Troopers arrived shortly thereafter and closed down the eastbound side of the highway because the car was fully involved and flames were shooting high above the vehicle…

Barnstable Firefighters were notified and scrambled an engine to the scene…

The highway was completely shut down for about 5 to 10 minutes as firefighters did their job knocking down the volatile engine fire.

The flames were extinguished and police reopened one travel lane while firefighters overhauled the vehicle and cleaned up the scene…

The driver of the vehicle briefly spoke with HN and mentioned that he had lost a leather jacket in the fire… but more importantly, he felt fortunate he managed to escape injury. A state trooper kindly transported the man back to his home in Brewster.

The three young women who stopped to help needed to get back in their car and travel on, but not before they received a heartfelt “thank you” from the driver.
