POLICE PURSUIT IN SANDWICH: “He’s a runner!” [HN VIDEO]
EAST SANDWICH – [DEVELOPING] – There was a police pursuit early this morning after Sandwich patrol officers responded to a report of a “B&E.”
As you will hear in the following HN Video, at about 2:30 a.m., the Sandwich Police Department received a call from an address on Easterly Drive, reporting what was initially described as a Breaking and Entering, with a male fleeing the scene in a BMW.
Moments later a Sandwich Patrolman announced he was behind the suspect vehicle that was now traveling south on Cotuit Road toward Mashpee. The vehicle had not been yielding as it took a right onto Buxus Shores Circle in the Boxwood Shores residential area.
As the vehicle turned onto Buxus Shores Circle, the patrolman can be heard saying, “slowing down, looking to get out,” followed by, “He’s a runner!”
Moments later, an officer announced they needed an ambulance for the driver who was said to be bleeding from his head.
Meanwhile, back at the address on Easterly Drive, the police dispatcher was having difficulty with the male caller, saying, “he is very agitated with me and does not like us.” Also saying he was refusing to give his name and that he hung up on her.
Online research revealed that a male associated with the Easterly Drive address had been indicted on drug trafficking charges in July of 2015. It’s uncertain if that individual was actually involved in this morning’s incident. The name and address of the caller is currently being withheld by HN pending official details.
According to radio transmissions, the driver of the BMW may have been a second individual known as “John Gagnon.” In June of 2018, A Sandwich adult male by the name of John Gagon received multiple charges after leading Sandwich Police Officers on a vehicle pursuit.
It’s still not official whether the John Gagnon in the June 2018 pursuit is the same individual involved in this morning’s pursuit. [DEVELOPING]
But according to a past Sandwich Police Department media release, “On June 10, 2018, at approximately 1037 hours, Sandwich Police responded to the Ryder Conservation area for a report of a male party unconscious with a needle next to him. Once on scene Officer Perkins and Sergeant Gilrein identified the male party as 29 year old John Gagnon of Sandwich. An uncapped needle was observed on the passenger seat. While attempting to check his well-being, Gagnon refused to exit the vehicle and struck the officer in the arm. Gagnon then put his vehicle in reverse almost striking both officers. At that point Officer Perkins and Sergeant Gilrein initiated a pursuit. Gagnon lead Officers through Barnstable, back into Sandwich, and onto Route 6 Westbound. During this time Gagnon was operating dangerously and running vehicles off the road. Gagnon obtained a flat tire and continued to operate on Route 6 on only his rim. Just before the Sagamore Bridge on Route 6 Westbound, Gagnon stopped the vehicle, exited the vehicle, jumped over the fence, and lead Officer Perkins and Sergeant Gilrein on a foot pursuit towards the powerlines. Gagnon was apprehended and placed into custody with the help of Officer Wood, Bourne State Police and Bourne Police. The Sandwich Fire Department transported Gagnon to the hospital for minor injuries.
[The John Gagnon in the June 2018 incident was] “charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (vehicle), Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, OUI Drugs, Operating to Endanger, and Failure to Stop for Police.”
The driver in this morning’s pursuit was reportedly transported to Cape Cod hospital after said to have been bleeding from the head.
Back at the Easterly Drive address, a second ambulance responded to evaluate a second individual for unknown reasons. Also, a member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit was called to photograph evidence. Also, according to radio transmissions, police may have had probable cause to make some type of arrest on someone involved in this morning’s Easterly Drive disturbance.
